Ulysses 31

While this Japanese/French co-production is essentially a kids' cartoon series, its sublimely jaw-dropping qualities can possibly only be fully appreciated in retrospect. In a dystopian post-modern interpretation of the classical Greek Ulysses epic, Ulysses, Telemach, Temis and rather superfluous sidekick robot Nono have been cursed to wander through the universe aboard their spaceship in search of a way home, stopping at various weird planets, put to the test each time anew by strange alien beings and peoples. The concept bears great possibilities - the series indeed stands apart, offering, in a positive way, a peculiar, at times deliciously disturbing balance of mythical and science fiction elements, rounded off by visuals which, at their best, nearly bounder on the surreal, and an eerie, fittingly subdued, sometimes minimalistic soundtrack driven by early-'80s synthesizers.

title description in the file supplement
Circe's Theme This mournful, sad tune is likely to be employed in desperate scenes at the end of an episode, when Ulysses has lost everything again and has to continue his dreadful journey, and, in this case, was taken from the episode in which Ulysses meets Circe. comment, chords -
Theme Song The main theme song is in fact rather long for a series' opening titles - half of it is kept instrumental, with the narrator filling us in on the situation, after which the actual song starts, which is unusually pop compared to the rest of the series' soundtrack, including a major-scale chorus. comment, lyrics, chords -
