Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs

If you're lucky enough to count this glorious anime series among your cherished memories from the '80s, chances are you will agree that Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs remains one of the most intriguingly cultish series around, at least for those in the know. Who wouldn't want to be recruited alongside Saber, Fireball, Colt, and April, fighting the evil Outriders inside Ramrod, the giant spaceship/robot, while tuned in to quite a distinctive soundtrack indeed? Well, at least, Dale Schacker's dynamic score was catchy enough to make me create a few MIDI files.

Many of these files were actually created before the, shall we say, broader resurgence of the series throughout the web, which eventually led up to re-runs and the release of DVDs. I only mention this since, at the time, the original titles of these tunes were not a matter of public knowledge at all, seeing as anything pertaining to the series was a bit hard to come by, and actually, me and fellow expert Rei rather arbitrarily coined many of them, as seen below. And yes, even after an official soundtrack had been released and the official titles had finally surfaced, some of our makeshift titles still survived - funny, isn't it?
Oh, and I must mention the .mp3 files that some anonymous person made by simply recording some of my MIDI files as audio. Needless to say, those were not a revelation at all in the sense of actual high-quality Saber Rider music files, in fact they were utterly needless given that most people can play MIDI more or less smoothly anyway, but nonetheless they circulated online for a little while. To clear my name, let me assure you that I had nothing to do with this!

To download, just right-click the file of your choice and select Save as... from the pop-up menu. in the file lists what info is in fact stored within the MIDI file itself - to view it, you'll simply need to open the file in a regular text editor, such as WordPad or Notepad. A supplement is an additional document to be downloaded separately.

Colt's Theme Colt is, of course, the arguably coolest in the bunch, and his theme tune very much lives up to his cool-as-the-Outrider-dimension gunslinger nature. Please note that I made this one from my memory only, so it's not very accurate - see below for a much better version. comment, chords -
Nemesis' Theme In the blue corner, wearing the black robe and robot skull, here goes Nemesis, super-boyscout chief and chronically bored leader of the evil Outriders. This tune, mostly used in conjunction with this character, turns out to be quite a somber, heavy piece. comment chords, guitar tablature
Eye to Eye Just remember, no, savour that scene when April takes on the young cadet Jesse Blue to teach him some martial arts moves... yes, eye-to-eye combat indeed! Surfacing here, you'll encounter the western/country influences worked into the music, and also one of the series' interludes as an addition. comment, chords -
Action! This, really, bears a sort of all-purpose character. Whenever there's some major-scale combat, destruction, attack, or assault going on, you can almost count on this signature track being used, which in fact is no more than a derival from the series' great main theme song, which finds its way into many of the pieces. comment, chords, guitar tablature -
Space Cowboys The spirit of the good old wild west genuinely influenced not only the series itself, but also the music. This tune is probably one of the most country-ish of the series, and is handily employed when, for instance, planets named after Southern American states are explored, later to be cleansed of all Outrider mischief. comment, chords, guitar tablature -
Goodbye Theme Needless to say, we need a fair share of farewell scenes and hearty moments as well. This pretty, melodic piece captures that whole mood quite well, likely to lead you towards the end credits, complemented by a cheesy Saber Rider voiceover. Also, it fittingly happens to be played at the end of the very final episode. comment, chords, guitar tablature -
Theme Song If you were to identify the series by a single attribute, choosing this killer tune probably wouldn't be far off hand. Sporting some full-on vocals and the proto-guitar-solo which was quoted in several other tunes from the series, this file in fact compiles the opening and ending themes into an ultimate version. comment lyrics, chords, guitar tablature; guitar solo; monophonic MIDI for ringtone creation
Mystery Theme Think of those so-called mystery series and their soundtracks, and compare: could it be that this very tune in reality set the standard for everything to follow? No matter what, this creepy tune is best accomodated in scenes of dark suspense when that Outrider spy just might sneak around the corner at any second! comment, chords -
Adagio for Outriders Being something of a flipside to Nemesis' theme, this mellow tune is definitely all doom-and-gloom again, but in a minimalistic, all the more sullen shape. The arrangement is almost classical, based around brass instruments, and, even though it's short, it's quite intense nonetheless. comment, chords -
Colt's Theme v.02 Well, I had to revamp, retranscribe and crank up the whole thing sometime, after my previous Colt's Theme didn't quite live up to the original, and here indeed goes a new, much more definite version of one of the probable fan favorites, including some more parts as well. "Colt!", whistle, whistle! comment, chords -
