Shonen Knife "Twist Barbie" |
Appearing on their 1993 international album Let's Knife, this song is a supreme example
of Shonen Knife's unique blend of bubblegum-punk-power-pop with an attitude. Marvellous, and
actually pretty relevant, band, amazing song!

Luna Sea "Hurt" |
One of the stand-out tracks on their 1996 album Style, itself a blazing jrock
manifesto par excellence, this one showcases Luna Sea's heavier side very well and includes some
of the most rock-out guitars they've ever recorded.

J "Burnout" |
J, the bass player in Luna Sea, released this solo single in 1997, taken from the album
Pyromania, and I just had to sequence it when I heard it since it basically really
rocks like crazy, influenced by some American hard rock.

Violet Vision "Rain Drops" |
Never again did I really hear of this rather unknown band, but this song, released on an
independent label, just had a little something, beside its more direct mass-appeal induced
by a generally rockin' arrangement, that I tried to convey into MIDI.

Laputa "Four Leaf Clover" |
Goth-tinged, metal-inspired, skillful musicianship ensures Laputa's success with their
style of eerie, gloomy, no-holds-barred rock. On their first major label outing Kagerou
in 1996, this stands out as being undeniably catchy as well.

Luna Sea "Storm" |
The first single to be released from their 1998 album Shine, this tune manages to
keep a functional balance between its pop-influenced chorus destined to be sang along and
a more rock-out fast-paced verse part, thereby becoming another of their instant classics.

Siam Shade "Dreams" |
Essentially, this song is all down to its perfect melodic pop songwriting, but the vigor
which eventually sustains it all comes down to Siam Shade's break-neck velocity - they successfully
hammer down this pretty tune, a single release from 1998's Siam Shade 5, with a big load of rock energy.

The Brilliant Green "The Lucky Star ***" |
The kick-off track on their 2001 album Los Angeles, this guitar-dominated wake-up call
to the inclined listener initially just struck me as being so catchy, loaded with that sort of
broadband rock energy, that I had to try and render all that into a MIDI file.
