If anime means a bit more than Pokémon and other youthfully flashy formats to you, you
may well have heard of, or maybe seen, the movie and series Fist of the North Star, also known by its Japanese
title Hokuto no Ken, a kind of martial arts superpower death and destruction epos. The music, appropriately, packs
a post-apocalyptic punch, while most signature songs came courtesy of Japanese rock group the Kodomo Band, who really
delivered some kick-ass catchiness in their truly '80s pop rock style.

Heart of Madness |
This kind of theme song is a genuinely '80s hard rock affair. Building up gradually into a grand chorus you might possibly sing
along soon enough, it offers a load of synthesizers, including an irresistible bridge part prior to the final
chorus, and equally numerous guitars, of which I didn't really transcribe the solo at the time.

Ending Theme |
The ending piece, then, is a comparatively slow and mellow track, and in fact an instrumental version of Purple Eyes,
which is featured below. There's a load of instruments joining in a gradual crescendo, underlayered by highly percussive and
actually slightly weird drums.

Heart of Madness (Complete and Revised) |
Contrary to the shortened in-movie version of the song found above, this is the no-holds-barred full version of the track,
including an unheard second verse part and a few altered elements. Also, I started from scratch and resequenced everything,
resulting in an altogether better MIDI than the one above.

Purple Eyes |
Complementing Heart of Madness, this one lays down a sufficiently sad mood. Actually, it's the song which
the Ending Theme above was derived from, and this is probably better than that MIDI - of course, it includes the vocal
part, but more importantly, I completely redid it, augmenting the sequence's accuracy considerably.

La ville de la croix du sud |
Pulled from a French soundtrack album, this instrumental effort contains some brooding brass-centered
rhythms and decidedly dissonant intervals and chords, while retaining vaguely exotic percussion
and a jazzy distorted guitar solo. Definitely worth something outside its visual context!
